But what makes Duolingo so addictive? The answer lies in AI. While Duo might seem like a passive-aggressive cartoon character, he’s backed by some serious machine learning power that helps me (and millions of others) learn Korean in a way that’s effective, personalised, and weirdly fun.

If I keep confusing “안녕하세요” (hello) and “사랑해요” (I love you) (because let’s be real, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God made me emotional), the app knows. And let’s be honest, I’d rather mess up in front of an AI than accidentally confess my love to a barista in Seoul.
